Understanding the Rinjani trekking map is the first step to a successful and safe climb. Mount Rinjani National Park is massive, covering over 41,000 hectares, and features several distinct micro-climates, deep valleys, and towering peaks.
Currently, there are three primary official trekking routes used to access the Mount Rinjani Summit, the Segara Anak Crater Lake, and the natural hot springs. Each trail offers a completely different landscape and physical challenge.

🧠The Three Main Mount Rinjani Routes
When you book a package with Ali Trekking, we help you select the best path based on your fitness level, time constraints, and what you want to see. Here is a breakdown of the three main trails you will find on the Mount Rinjani map:
1. The Sembalun Route (The Summit Trail)
The Sembalun route is the most popular starting point for trekkers whose primary goal is reaching the 3,726m summit.
-
Starting Elevation: ~1,100 meters.
-
The Terrain: This trail begins in the high-altitude, open savanna of East Lombok. Because it is largely unshaded, you will have expansive, sweeping views of the rolling hills from the very first step.
-
The Journey: It provides a relatively gradual ascent for the first few hours before a steep, demanding climb up to the Sembalun Crater Rim (the basecamp for the summit push).
-
Best For: Summit chasers and those doing the 2-Day/1-Night or 3-Day/2-Night summit packages.
2. The Senaru Route (The Rainforest Trail)
Starting directly from our hometown of Senaru Village, this route is famous for its rich biodiversity and dense jungle canopy.
-
Starting Elevation: ~600 meters.
-
The Terrain: You will hike through thick, shaded tropical rainforest. This route offers excellent opportunities to spot local wildlife, including the rare black ebony leaf monkey (Lutung) and long-tailed macaques.
-
The Journey: While it is a continuous, steep climb from the village up to the Senaru Crater Rim, the thick tree canopy provides welcome relief from the tropical sun. The Senaru rim offers what is arguably the best panoramic view of the lake and the active Mount Barujari cone.
-
Best For: Nature lovers, beginners doing the 2-Day/1-Night Crater Rim trek, and as the standard descent route for the 3-Day and 4-Day traverse packages.
3. The Torean Route (The “Jurassic Park” Trail)
Historically used by local pilgrims traveling to the hot springs for healing rituals, the Torean route has recently gained massive popularity for its breathtaking, dramatic scenery.
-
Starting Elevation: ~600 meters.
-
The Terrain: This trail follows the river valley that flows out of the Segara Anak Lake. It is characterized by steep cliff faces, dense tropical vegetation, and spectacular waterfalls, most notably the towering Penimbungan Waterfall.
-
The Journey: The Torean route is highly undulating—you will climb up and down sheer valley walls. The paths are narrower and require good balance, making it a more technical hike.
-
Best For: Experienced hikers, photography enthusiasts, and those looking for an incredibly scenic descent from the lake.
📍 Navigating the Trek: Key Landmarks on the Map
No matter which route you combine for your Rinjani trekking itinerary, your map will highlight several crucial landmarks:
-
Pos (Rest Stops): Each route features designated resting shelters (Pos 1, Pos 2, Pos 3, etc.) where your Ali Trekking porters will set up lunch and provide fresh water.
-
Crater Rims (Pelawangan): The high-altitude campsites located at the edge of the caldera. This is where you will sleep in tents before heading to the summit or down to the lake.
-
Segara Anak Lake (2,000m): The stunning crescent-shaped crater lake located in the heart of the volcano.
-
Aik Kalak Hot Springs: Located just a 10-minute walk from the lake campsites, these natural volcanic springs are the perfect place to soothe tired muscles.
