About Mount Rinjani Geography
Lombok is a captivating island nestled within the Lesser Sunda chain. This tropical archipelago stretches from west to east and comprises Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba, and the Timor Islands. The region’s dramatic topography is shaped by oceanic crusts acting on the shelf, forming a spectacular line of volcanoes.
Mount Rinjani is one of at least 129 active volcanoes across Indonesia. It belongs to the Sunda Arc trench system, a volatile segment of the Pacific Ring of Fire—a massive network of fault lines stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia.
The highlands of Lombok remain beautifully forest-clad and largely undeveloped, contrasting with the highly cultivated lowlands. The island’s fertile volcanic soil supports major crops like rice, soybeans, coffee, tobacco, cotton, cinnamon, cacao, cloves, cassava, corn, coconuts, bananas, and vanilla.
